Safety minimum is 2/32", but experts recommend replacement at 4/32" for safe stopping on wet roads.
The Penny Test: Insert a penny upside down into the tread. If you can see Lincoln's head, replace now.
The Quarter Test: If tread doesn't reach Washington's head, you're under 4/32" — plan a replacement.
Watch for wear bars — raised strips in the tread grooves. When flush with the surface, you're at 2/32".
Rubber degrades over time — especially in Arizona's extreme heat, causing dry-rot, cracking, and internal failure.
6-Year Rule: Many manufacturers recommend replacement after 6 years, regardless of tread depth.
10-Year Maximum: Bridgestone and Michelin engineers consider 10 years the absolute maximum — including spare tires.
